The best cup of masala chai I’ve ever drank was my Nani’s. Every morning when Nani visited us in Toronto from London, the house would fill with the strong scent of her piping hot chai. So hot that she would pour the dark liquid onto a saucer, gently blowing on the liquid, creating ripples. This allowed the chai to cool down before Nani carefully sipped. I can remember Nani in her floral saree, munching on her toast and drinking her tea. My cousin Niki and I would visit Nani in London, secretly hoping she would have a cup of leftover chai from the morning that we could share. Nani’s secret? Lots of ginger and lots of sugar. It’s sad to think she’s gone now, but I’ll never forget the taste of her sweet and spicy chai-just like Nani.
