Designer Bibhu Mohapatra's Fall Winter 2020 collection is inspired by the modern Indian woman.
“My heritage flows through my veins,” says Mohapatra. “Whether it’s the colours, whether it’s the intricacies of the embroideries or the details of the textiles, I always lean on my heritage.”
Mohapatra’s early fashion muses were his mother who taught him to sew and his sister who he designed a saree for long before he become a globally coveted fashion designer.
“A traditional Indian mother teaching her son to sew, that alone was my biggest break to have that kind of support. She kind of regretted it a bit because all her old sarees got cut up because I made things for my sister,” says Mohapatra with a laugh. “I owe it all to them.”
Other female influences for the Bibhu Mohapatra Fall Winter 2020 collection include Indian poet Amrita Pritam’s novel Pinjar about a young women abducted during India’s partition. The Designer says his collection is a celebration of women’s resilience and demonstration of courage and strength against all odds.
When we met Mohapatra in Paris, he also spoke at length about the craftsmen who design his sustainable, organic designs in partnership with Sadhguru’s Isha Foundation. He also partnered with jewelry Designer Ranjana Khan infusing the collection with bright feather pieces.
