An Artist Inspiring Change
Designer Bibhu Mohapatra’s Spring Summer 2021 collection pays homage to Hungarian-Indian artist Amrita Sher-Gil known for depicting Indian women in the 1930s.
And even though this season’s fashion circuit was nowhere near the norm, Mohapatra moved forward with designing his next collection. But instead of showcasing it on the New York or Paris runway, the Designer created a fashion film introducing us back into his wonderfully bright and inspiring world.
“This moment in history—if we are listening and looking deeply with our whole selves—has the power to permanently shift our perceptions and relationships with race, privilege, equity, empathy, and hope. Through art, and, in this case, through dance and movement, we can observe how physically—and compassionately—confronting barriers and blocks can profoundly push us to reassess, improvise, and find a way forward…in our work, our art, and in ourselves. To change, we must move, be it awkward, unfamiliar, uncomfortable, and (hopefully) enlightening.”
