This piece by Chaitra Prasad is reminiscent of Indian royalty’s decadent days, particularly the opulent jewelry worn by the Nizams of Hyderabad. Prasad also looks to vintage Indian photographs, sumptuous designers like Sabyasachi and historical fiction such as White Mughals by William Dalrymple to illuminate her work. Photographers including Paolo Roversi, Prabuddha Dasgupta and Steve McCurry are amongst her favourite inspirations for colour, feel or mood. Trips to museums such as the MET and Rubens in New York and the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem help spark her creativity. In the end, it is Prasad’s infatuation with classic love stories which drives much of her art.
